Research lab, conferences, and policy work.
Directed by Prof. Amer, the Sustainable Systems Laboratory pursues systems and storage-systems research: predictive storage management, energy-efficient computing, and resilient data storage and systems.
More storage & systems research →Prof. Amer works on the ethical, philosophical, and societal dimensions of technology — including AI and data ethics, philosophy of technology, and the Cyberina project exploring embodiment and creativity in robotics. Through the Aspen Tech Policy Hub, he developed a bug bounty policy project for public-sector agencies.
More technology & society work →Prof. Amer chairs the steering committee of MSST, the International Conference on Massive Storage Systems and Technologies, hosted annually at Santa Clara University; served as local host for IACAP 2022; and co-created and ran Ballots & Bots with Jane Leftwich Curry (Political Science).
More conference leadership →Prof. Amer advises undergraduate senior design and independent study projects through the Sustainable Systems Laboratory. Recent work includes GAM:BIT, a modular backgammon engine, multi-agent battlefield framework, and multi-format game interface, developed by Ryan Prioreschi and Samuel Reiter from a project pitch by Prof. Amer — see the lab's past senior design projects for a fuller list of advised/co-advised undergraduate work.
